Today is our anniversary! September 1st of 2009 we rented our first 16 foot UNIT to a business owner that needed commercial storage. He had purchased another business’ equipment and was not ready to move the equipment into his current location. He needed commercial storage fast and we were happy to deliver.   Luck for us, our first 16 foot UNIT was delivered from the manufacturer minutes before we needed it!    Our customer rented for over 7 months and then we delivered his excess business inventory to a new location.  Another happy customer.

We were a new franchise with just two employees (really, owners). Fast forward one year to today. We have doubled our staff and have provided high quality containers and customer service to hundreds in the metro Milwaukee area. Growing a business during a recession is challenging, but we found the people of metro Milwaukee value good quality product and service at a completive price. Moving Checklist – 5 Weeks Before Moving

• Plan ahead for your UNITS mobile storage container delivery to your current home and future home.   Contact your property manager or local municipality to ensure you will be complying with their packing rules and restrictions. 
• Have your yard sale or donate your items that are not being moved. 
• Continue collecting boxes and other packing supplies. You can order boxes and packing supplies from UNITS and they will be delivered with your portable storage unit. 
• Start packing items you don’t use often.
• Donate anything that did not sell at your yard sale and remember to get a receipt for income tax purposes.

Moving Checklist – 8 Weeks Before Moving

• Create a “move” file to keep track of estimates, receipts and other important documents.
• Check with IRS to see what expenses, if any, are deductable.
• Get a quote on your storage unit. 
• Budget for moving expenses and start collecting estimates.
• Start researching your new community.  Look for community guides on-line.
• Read up on moving and loading.   Check-out this blog for tips!
• Start collecting boxes, packing papers, packing peanuts and bubble wrap.
• Draw a floor plan of your new home and start deciding where your furniture and belongings will go when you unpack your storage unit.

Many of our customers at UNITS ask how to pack their belongings.  I respond carefully!  Okay, really there are many things to consider when packing: weight of boxes, durability of belongings, and ease of access.  Start with lots of high quality boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap and have a scisscor and sharpie on hand.  Here are a few of my personal favorite packing tips to help get the job done:

• Do not over pack boxes; bulging box sides can damage surrounding boxes and not protect what is inside.
• Place liquid containers in plastic bags to reduce the chance of leaking.
• Reinforce boxes with an extra strip of packing tape!
• Place heavy items in the bottom of the box and lighter ones on top.
• Remove light bulbs from lamps before packing.
• Place lamp shades in boxes to protect from denting.
• Never pack any item that could cause a fire or damage to the UNIT (no toxic materials, gas, kerosene, fireworks, loaded firearms)
• Pack items from the same room in the same box to make unpacking easier.
• Pack some everyday, so you are not overwhelmed with packing all in one day.

Boys and Girls Club with Roscoe

It was an exciting day at the UNIT located at Leff’s Lucky Town (7208 W. State Street) as children from the Boys and Girls Clubs gathered to receive Favre t-shirts and hats.  This is all part of the Favre clothing drive for the Boys and Girls Club of Milwaukee.  Clothing will be collected through Nov. 1 (when the Packers play the Vikings) at Leff’s Lucky Town.  Leff’s is offering a pint of beer or soft drink when a Favre item is donoated.
